How do polarized lenses work?

Light reflected from surfaces like a flat road or smooth water is generally horizontally polarized. These horizontally polarized rays are blocked by the vertically arranged "polarizer's" that exist inside the lenses.

The Test.

Put on a pair of polarized sunglasses, look directly at the horizontal object reflecting light (e.g. a lake or car bonnet), slowly tilt your head sideways, you will see the light gradually become brighter, this is because the light rays are slowly being let in as the angle of the "polarizer's" change. The result is a reduction in annoying and sometimes dangerous glare.
